Why Choose Professional Self Defence?
Professional Self Defence Studio offers group or private lessons, or a combination of the two. The difference at our school is private instruction where the student can choose a time convenient to them for their lessons, where they learn at their own pace and experience no stress or embarrassment while learning. The student learns 7 to 17 times faster than with group instruction. Our school specializes in self defence and physical fitness. Students can become more physically fit with our unlimited group instruction. Our instructors are chosen for their performance, interest and ability to help others learn the required material. Modern training methods, traditional kata and weapon defence create a broad foundation from which our students learn the essence of self defence. The Professional Self Defence Program provides a comprehensive course which develops self-confidence, self discipline, physical endurance and agility, self defence ability, and pride. Furthermore, our program develops personality and character.

How do I get started?
We will enroll you in our unique three lesson trial or introductory program, in which you will learn some basic escapes, control, and injury techniques. The cost of these three lessons is only $34.95. All three lessons will be held on a private (one to one) basis, with you and your instructor.
How do I continue after the FREE trial or introductory period?
This actually depends on you, your aims in wanting to learn and how extensively you want to train. Therefore, the cost is dependent on the type of program that you select. We offer special family rates where one adult member of the family pays and the rest study with them free. In other words, we let the students set their own goals in regards to training and the cost is dependent of that goal. However, for Self Defence we recommend a year to acquire a good working knowledge that will enable you to handle yourself in practically any situation. Many of our students continue with us beyond the one-year point because of the fun and fitness that they get from their training.
When can I start?
If you are serious, now! Since we are limited in time and space, we only accept new students on an appointment basis. Therefore, in order to ensure a place for you in our school, it is advised that you make your decision as soon as possible.
Why does Kenpo use a "Black Gi" (uniform)?
When James Mitose returned to Hawaii in 1937 from his Kosho/Kenpo training with his Grandfather, Sukuhei Yoshida (20th Great Grand Master) in Japan, he knew that people would assume his "Art" was just another Japanese/Okinawan martial art.
He immediately wanted to send a message to all the other martial artists in Hawaii that this was not the case. He did this by wearing a "Black Gi," which was contrary to the nature of the "Traditional" Japanese martial arts! James Mitose wanted all to know that while there were some similarities to other martial arts, Kosho/Kenpo had taken a different path of development and was a style of its own - not to be considered Japanese in nature or origin!
Kenpo or kempo?
There is no difference between Kenpo and Kempo, they are different spellings of the same martial art. The Japanese kanji character for kenpo and kempo is the same, yet when translated to English, the N can also be an M. Kenpo or Kempo translates to “Law of the fist”.
